“Scherma in Piazza” in Portofino with Olympic silver medalists Macchi and Bianchi

“Scherma in Piazza” in Portofino: a special event with Olympic silver medalists Macchi and Bianchi
As the 2025 European Fencing Championships approach, set to take place in Genoa from June 14 to 19, the great Italian fencing tradition continues to shine with spectacular events. On Saturday, October 7, at 6:30 PM, the enchanting square of Portofino will host the latest edition of “Scherma in Piazza.” Following the success of the first event in Chiavari, where Olympic champion Giulia Rizzi took center stage, this time the spotlight will be on two foil stars: Filippo Macchi and Guillaume Bianchi.
The two athletes, who won silver at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, are set to perform in front of the public in a stunning setting. Macchi, well known for his nail-biting final against Hong Kong’s Cheung Ka Long, narrowly losing 15-14, and Bianchi will deliver a breathtaking performance alongside other top Italian fencers. Organized by Club Scherma Rapallo in collaboration with the Municipality of Portofino and Portofino Yacht Marina, the event offers a unique opportunity to bring the sport closer to the public ahead of the European Championships in Genoa 2025.
Also taking part in the evening will be Alessandra Tavola, Lucrezia Canessa, Giovanni Battista Pistacchi, and Giorgio Canepa, competing in foil and sabre, along with Benedetta Madrignani, Margherita Baratta, Stefano Damiani, and Luigi Gibelli in épée. The night promises excitement and spectacle for all fencing enthusiasts.
Fencing in Portofino: a unique showcase for our sport
“Portofino is an extraordinary showcase for Italian fencing,” said Giovanni Falcini, President of the Liguria Regional Fencing Committee. “With champions like Macchi and Bianchi in attendance, our young athletes will find the inspiration to grow and aim high. This event is part of the journey toward the 2025 European Championships, and we thank Club Scherma Rapallo, the Municipality of Portofino, and all partners for their dedication to its organization.”
Gabriella Bozza, President of Club Scherma Rapallo, also emphasized the significance of the event: “For years, we have worked to bring fencing to public spaces with events like ‘Scherma di Luna.’ This new stop in Portofino is an exciting challenge that we have embraced, both for our collaboration with the Municipality and to promote the European Championships in Genoa.
