Fencing: Here Are the 28 Italians Called Up for the European Championships in Genoa from June 14 to 19
Twenty-eight Azzurri set to conquer the 2025 Genoa European Fencing Championships. The official roster of the Italian fencing team was announced today, set to compete from June 14 to 19 at the continental event—the first of the new Olympic quadrennial—on the pistes of the Jean Nouvel Pavilion for the preliminary rounds and in Genoa’s new sports arena for medal bouts.
The national team coaches—Simone Vanni for foil, Dario Chiadò for épée, Andrea Aquili for women’s sabre, and Andrea Terenzio for men’s sabre—opted in many cases for five-athlete squads, with relay rotations between individual and team events.
The men’s foil team features the same quartet that won silver at the Paris 2024 Olympics: Guillaume Bianchi, Alessio Foconi, Filippo Macchi, and Tommaso Marini, who enters as reigning European and world champion. Davide Filippi will serve as the reserve.
The women’s foil team includes reigning champion Arianna Errigo, Martina Favaretto, Anna Cristino, Martina Batini (competing only in the individual event), and world champion Alice Volpi, who will take Batini’s place in the team event.
The men’s sabre squad also features relay rotations: Luca Curatoli, Michele Gallo, and Pietro Torre will compete in both events, while Dario Cavaliere will only fence individually, with Matteo Neri stepping in for the team event.
In women’s sabre (with Eloisa Passaro sidelined due to injury), the four selected fencers are Michela Battiston, Chiara Mormile, Manuela Spica, and Mariella Viale. Alessia Di Carlo is the reserve.
The men’s épée team fields five fencers: Davide Di Veroli, Matteo Galassi, Andrea Santarelli, Valerio Cuomo (individual only), and Gianpaolo Buzzacchino (team only).
Among the women épéeists, Rossella Fiamingo, Giulia Rizzi, and Alberta Santuccio will compete in both events, while Sara Maria Kowalczyk will only fence individually, with Lucrezia Paulis replacing her for the team event.
Italy enters the home European Championships with a strong record of 59 podium finishes this World Cup season, fielding a mix of experience and youth. The selection includes 12 Olympic medalists but also eight debutants, two of whom are U20 (Galassi and Viale are still in the Youth category, making their European Championship debut alongside Cristino, Cavaliere, Spica, Buzzacchino, Kowalczyk, and Paulis).
In Genoa, Federal President Luigi Mazzone will be joined by Federal Councilor Elisa Albini as Head of Delegation.
